ABOUT 30 YEARS AGO. A NEW RESTAURANT IN TOWN, AND OH THAT BOY COULD EAT! |
You can probably tell that Charlie was not
a real big guy as far as size goes, but man could he eat. None of us were ever
really sure where he put it and a hallow leg was not left out of our curiosities
either. There was also the egg eating contest in Williams
Lake B.C. which unfolds something like this, and for those of you who have seen
the movie, Cool Hand Luke, with Paul Newman and George Kennedy, you know
exactly what I am talking about. We had just finished our last night in Williams Lake B.C.! I believe we were
about half way through our last night and on a 15 minute break when Charlie
started being his usual funny self. I don't recall exactly what lead to it, but
all of a sudden Charlie made the bold comment, "I can eat 50 eggs"! I believe
brother Steve also took the challenge on this one. The Club owner and the local
store owner were both within earshot of the conversation and with Charlie's
comment, well, that is all that was needed. After we finished the night out, the
store owner opened up his store about 2:00 a.m. and brought about 8 dozen eggs
to our motel room, which was equiped with a stove, pots and pans. THE BET WAS
ON!!

We were playing in a town called Revelstoke B.C. at the time and a
new Hamburger Joint had just opened it's doors. I believe a bet was made between
Charlie, and our brother Steve,
(Bass player), as to who could eat the most
burgers in this new place. As you can see by the picture, these burger were a
pretty descent size! If I remember correctly, I believe Charlie wound up eating
the 3 in front of him, a good amount of Fries, and then some. Long story short,
Charlie won the bet!
Anyway, this picture made the Front Page of the
Revelstoke paper the next day and I don't believe there were any challengers
that cared to take Charlie on in an eating contest.
